We arrived in Johannesburg safe and sound! Mine and Nigels case were the last ones out – just our luck!
From here we went outside to meet our driver Norman, he then took us to the African Pride Hotel at Melrose Arch.

African heat is no joke, 35 degrees and I’m in joggies, I couldn’t wait to get in to the hotel and change! We checked in, and decided to get ready to meet for breakfast before starting our day. I called my mum to give her an update and let her know i was still alive before heading downstairs. The breakfast was unreal! Highly Recommend if you ever find yourself down this way 😉

Getting ready to spend the day in Joberg I heard a knock at the door. A member of staff dropped off a peri-farms ‘goody bag’.
Inside the bag there was T-shirts, a cap, suncream, sweets, a waterbottle and other goodies! An amazing start and welcome to the trip!
This really made me realise that this trip was actually happening. I was here, in Johannesburg, ready to go on to Mozambique.
Today we embarked on a tour around Johannesburg. Where we seen many favourite tourist sights such as Nelson Mandela’s house, Constitutional Hill, and the Constitutional Court.
This was inspiring, hearing that there was separate prisons for black and white people. Mozambique was very racially segregated until a recent apartheid. It is amazing to see the progress a country has made in such a short time, albeit a long way to go.
We saw the prison which Nelson Mandela spent his years in and out of, advocating for rights for the people.
Between each stop we were more than appreciative of the AC on the bus. Making stops along the way for coffee and snacks was a good way to break up the day and really take in the views and information. Did you know, the writing on the outside of the constitutional court, says constitutional court in 11 different languages! It was also built using bricks from the awaiting trial blocks that were knocked down after the apartheid.
From there we went to ‘The LivingRoom’ which is a rooftop bar for some chilled drinks.
This was the first day team Mozambique spent together and I wouldn’t have changed anything. We all got to know each other over drinks… and looking back on it that would be a theme for the week! From the living room We went off to Nando’s for dinner.
P.S best Nando’s I’ve ever had!!
We found out they inject the peri peri baste into the breast of the chicken which ensures it remains juicy and full of flavour. Seeing the different menu items and having a tour around the store it showed the differences. A drive-thru nando’s? Just imagine that in the UK!
Getting back to the hotel at night was somewhat a relief as I had now been up for just under 36 hours… talk about tiring!
I ran a bath and afterwards sank into bed by 10pm for the early start in the morning (early mornings… another theme for the trip!).
I am so excited to see what this trip brings… I really feel that there will be something new everyday that opens my eyes to the world around me
Oh, and here’s the very first picture of TeamMoz!
