23/10/2019: Farm to Flame

Farm to flame.

What exactly does this mean?

It is a program that Nando’s have created to ensure we are having the best possible work ethic whilst making the biggest difference.

Each year they send representatives to Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. I was lucky enough to be selected for the Mozambique trip!

In order to go I need to do a few trips to Putney down in London for training on the surveys and tablets!

The trips made for good memories… especially when you wake up late.. half asleep and confuse the shower cord with an emergency cord 😬.

Whilst we are over there we visit people who work on peri-farms and take them through a survey. The survey covers a wide range of topics including: water sources, healthcare access, educational access, housing and farming. Each interview takes roughly 1.5 hours, and can get quite personal so it is important to build up a rapport with the farmer beforehand.

Using the data collected from these surveys we can analyse the Chilli Program we run to make sure they are getting the best deal possible. As a company, nandos, pays above the market rate for the crops to ensure that farmers are getting as much from the programme as possible.

It is important for me that trips like this are completed because we pay an organisation to pay the individual farmers, so I always explain it like undercover boss! We want to make sure that we are doing the groundwork we say we are, if not why not, and make sure that we are creating the best conditions.

I am travelling away with the following people;

Jess; She is 35 and works in the HR department of Central Support in London.

Nigel; He is 23, and works as a buddy the Swindon store down south.

Nadia; She is 41, and from the USA. She works as a patroa in a store in Maryland.

(Patroa in Portuguese means head of family, in a restaurant this is your store manager)

Percy; He is 40 and it’s the patroa of all patroas. He works as a patroa in Rosettenville (?) Johannesburg, the very first ever Nandos.

Whilst over there we will meet Yvonne, Laure, Samantha, Ari and Annika. They will make up the final members of TeamMoz.

I can’t wait to meet everyone and begin this amazing journey!
