29/10/2019: Day Five – Marracuene

We went out to farms in the Marracuene area today. Here the farm was owned by Mr Variato. When we arrived at this farm during our brief we got told to stamp our feet when walking through the farm area to scare off snakes. Good Joke! That turned out not to be a joke when Laure came to each group handing out snake gators to protect our ankles, just in case!

My first interview was with Mr Carlos José. He works on the farm owned by Mr Variato. He is 43 years old and loves working on the farm because his achievement is shown through his hard work. He can provide for his family. He says he always struggles for money, which means there isn’t always enough food and he stresses about his children’s education and future. But no matter what he makes sure they don’t go hungry and they attend school regularly. He is such a humble man and quoted “I do what I have to, to make sure my kids can focus on their future”.

My second interview was Ercilia Chirindza. She worked in Goao Americo Fumo farm and is 24 years old. She confined that she didn’t enjoy farming as much as other jobs that she has experienced but farming is better money. She can’t wait to start farming Chillies because the money is higher than the market and it will provide her a better income.

She can’t wait to start farming Chillies because the money is higher than the market and it will provide her a better income. She has a 9 year old daughter, Amelia, who lives with her mum. She shares a house with her husband who doesn’t have a job, so she is very proud of her role because she brings money to the house.

“Farming is not what i want to do for the rest of my life but it provides the best future for my family”

On the way home from the Generals farm, Laure informed us she had a surprise for us. Driving down the main road next to the beach we pulled over and received a coconut and a straw! Fresh coconut water, it was nicer than I thought it would be but I also have to admit – I much preferred the fresh water from my bottle.

Yvonne was only just learning what a candid photo was – a photo shot to look like you don’t know it’s being taken – so this led to us trying to get the perfect candid photo

Heading back to the guesthouse, tonight was scheduled as a chill night. This was perfect because as soon as we got back I was able to nap! Setting my alarm I was asleep before i knew it. Waking up I went for a quick shower before heading to the top deck to meet as a group to order food.

Ordering Mediterranean food the majority opted for chicken or beef shwarmas. I have not tried these before but I was pleasantly surprised! However.. potato inside a wrap, i dont think I will do that again anytime soon!

That night we sat around the table talking until 10pm – it may not seem that late, but trust me when you have been up since 6am all you want is your bed.
